A fire broke out on the afternoon of 25 June at the Smurfit Westrock mill in Biganos, in the Arcachon basin, some 60 kilometres from Bordeaux (South-West of France). At the height of the operation, nearly 130 firefighters and 70 vehicles were dispatched to the scene, including a water-bombing helicopter and a Dash aircraft.
According to initial reports from regional media (Sud-Ouest, France 3 Régions…), the fire broke out outside the buildings, near the stockpile of waste papers and boards. On this day of intense heat, the flames then quickly spread to the piles of wood and bark. By 8 pm, however, the fire was, according to the latest reports, under control.
