The event is directed by Stefano Mancuso, conceived and organized by Editori Laterza, and promoted by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca.

The theme for the 2026 edition of the Pianeta Terra Festival is “Forms of Intelligence.” It will feature over 90 sessions with scientists, neuroscientists, philosophers, economists, geopolitics experts, writers, and artists brought together to explore the various forms of intelligence and their impact on how we live, work, and envision the future.

Saturday, October 10 at 6:00 PM at the Church of San Francesco: Barbara Mazzolai, Associate Director for Robotics at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Italian Institute of Technology) and one of Italy’s most prominent scientists, will speak on “Intelligent Bodies and Thinking Machines.” For a long time, science strictly separated mind and body, viewing intelligence as independent of the physical form hosting it. In living systems, this separation does not exist: the way every organism perceives, acts, and makes decisions is deeply influenced by its structure, composition, and surrounding environment. This observation gives rise to the concept of “embodied intelligence,” which Mazzolai will explore while demonstrating its implications for robot design.

Sunday, October 11 at 11:45 AM at the Botanical Garden: Marco Camisani Calzolari — university professor and expert in digital communication and technological transformation — will lead the Focus session “Artificial Intelligence: Instructions for Use.” Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool already transforming work, communication, and daily decision-making. Camisani Calzolari will guide the audience through the inner workings of AI — how it functions, what it can truly do, and where it falls short — helping citizens navigate the ongoing technological and ethical debate with greater awareness.
