Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has collaborated with Dreco to develop a new solution for laundry detergent powder packaging that contains post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials, while maintaining the high level of protection required for moisture-sensitive products.
Laundry detergent powder packaging must effectively protect the product from moisture and water throughout its entire shelf life. Mondi’s re/loop PillowBag demonstrates that a high level of recycled material can be successfully integrated into flexible packaging for demanding FMCG applications without compromising performance, quality, or consumer convenience.
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) mandates that from January 1, 2030, a minimum of 35% post-consumer plastic recycled content must be used for this type of plastic packaging. With its 50% material content, the re/loop PillowBag is optimally positioned to support future compliance with this target and significantly reduces the use of virgin plastic. The solution has already been distributed to retailers across Germany, positioning Dreco as a pioneer in the early adoption of future-ready packaging, well ahead of legal deadlines.
To ensure transparency and traceability throughout the value chain, Mondi applied a mass balance approach under its ISCC PLUS certification, allowing traceable PCR materials to be tracked within its supply chain.
In line with Mondi’s MAP2030 sustainability commitments, the re/loop PillowBag is designed for recycling and has been evaluated according to Mondi’s Path to Circularity Scorecard and CEFLEX D4ACE guidelines. Its structure is considered compatible with established mechanical polyolefin (PO) recycling streams, promoting effective end-of-life treatment.
Matching its sustainability credentials, the packaging has been designed with consumer convenience in mind. The easy-open feature of the bag facilitates handling and routine use, while high-quality printing ensures a striking presence on the shelves.
Milo Drehsen, Owner and Managing Director of Dreco, comments: “Reducing the environmental impact of our packaging is a key goal for us, but performance is essential for products such as detergent powder. Collaborating with Mondi allowed us to introduce a solution that combines a high percentage of recycled material with the protection our products require. Launching this packaging in German retail stores is an important step on our sustainability roadmap.”
Sandor Kardos, Managing Director of Mondi Békéscsaba, says: “This project shows how expert technical knowledge and shared sustainability goals can deliver practical, scalable solutions. Together with Dreco, we have created a high-PCR packaging solution for a moisture-sensitive application that is designed for recycling and helps our customers stay ahead of regulation while meeting current market expectations.”
