Klabin adopts new technology in its mills to help combat COVID-19

To reinforce the hygiene and cleaning protocols at its units and increase the safety of its employees, Klabin, Brazil’s largest packaging paper producer and exporter, is installing ozone tunnels at the entry and exit points of its mills. The new system, which will enhance the disinfection of external surfaces, will start operating at the Company’s facilities in Telêmaco Borba and Ortigueira (PR), Otacílio Costa (SC) and Angatuba (SP) in the coming days. Plans are on to employ the technology in all of the Company’s operations across the country.

The application will be made inside a 3-meter long inflatable tunnel with nozzles that spray water droplets containing ozone. Employees will pass through the tunnel both before and after their work shifts to make sure their clothes, footwear, backpacks and personal protective equipment (PPE) are sanitized. Ozone is an efficient disinfectant that has traditionally been used in the food industry, which is not harmful to health and is already being used in combating the coronavirus.

Klabin has set up crisis committees, which have constantly evaluated the best practices in preventing and combating COVID-19. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Company has implemented strict preventive measures to ensure the safety of its employees working in the production of paper and packaging that supply the chain of essential items for the population in the hygiene, cleaning and hospital supplies segments.

Besides acquiring ozone tunnels and adopting and constantly updating other protocols, the company developed, in record time, the app “Klabin Saúde”, which speeds up the service provided to employees in Paraná and remotely connects them to medical teams at the units. The Company has established a permanent asepsis routine at its facilities and recently also donated hand sanitizer to all its professionals to take home.
