DS Smith Italy and Civil Protection in support of food solidarity

The voluntary sector is at the forefront in the management of the Covid-19 pandemic in Italy. As this new virus is putting a strain on the whole country in terms of health, economy and society, these organisations also cooperate with businesses like DS Smith.

The Italian Ministerial Decree of March 9, 2020, required all Italian citizens to stay at home and avoid any type of non-essential activity. This important decision also involved changes in the delivery of food to vulnerable people. To enable this important service, voluntary associations have changed their organisations to ensure the delivery of essential goods while respecting all health and security measures.

One of the associations that has been called in to ensure this service is Civil Protection. Among the main activities coordinated by Civil Protection is the assistance to the most vulnerable members of the population, the households that are most exposed to the health and economic effects of the pandemic.

Civil Protection volunteers in Italian municipalities are involved in the purchase and distribution of essential goods and DS Smith is helping them to ensure efficient delivery of food to these people through the donation of boxes.

Following a request from Chieri’s Municipality, addressed to the packaging companies, the plant in Pessione decided to deliver 500 boxes to facilitate the distribution of food and essential goods.

As the number of vulnerable people has increased in all Italian regions, our plant in Lucca responded to a request from the Lucca Civil Protection and donated about 300 boxes to meet the high number of essential goods requests.
