With uncertainty once again at its highest regarding energy price fluctuations following the outbreak of the war in Iran, the Technical Day organized on March 26 by the French Technical Association of the Paper Industry (Atip) at the Paper Technical Center (Centre technique du papier, CTP) in Grenoble was perfectly timed. More than 80 participants attended this day of discussions dedicated to optimizing energy consumption and preserving resources. A dozen paper companies were represented: Ahlstrom, Canson, Fibre Excellence, Fregata Hygiène, Gascogne, Kimberly Clark, Papeteries Léon Martin, Papeterie le Bourray, Papeteries du Léman (PDL), Sterimed, SWM (Papeteries de Saint-Girons), VPK Paper, and Wepa.
The day before, participants visited Allimand, a manufacturer of paper and non-woven equipments. They were able to appreciate the revitalization and renewed health of this historic Grenoble paper company, founded in 1850.
The day of conferences began with a presentation by AVEVA. The PI solutions designed to reduce consumption and improve performance monitoring were presented followed by insightful testimony from Stéphane de Gélis, Managing Director of Fibre Excellence Provence (Tarascon plant) and President of Atip. Olivier Riu (Copacel) and Éric Fourest (CTP) also set the stage by describing the regulatory framework and providing a techno-economic analysis of these topics.
Suppliers then took turns at the podium to present their solutions and approaches: EDF and Dalkia (electric boilers and support services), Acoem (air leak detection and partial discharges to reduce energy consumption), Epyr (thermal heat storage with a first application at the Wepa plant in Troyes), E4C Solutions (steam production that reduces consumption by a factor of two to five), Storio Energy (on-site battery storage), ABB (solutions for upgrading existing systems), and HeatLift (steam heat pumps and mechanical steam compression). Finally, BK Tech announced the signing, a few days ago, of a contract with Papeteries Léon Martin for the supply of a new wood pellet boiler. This installation will be operational by the end of the year.
