Atip technical day on the environment: the topic of the moment in France

For its first technical day of the year, held on 30 March in Rouen (about 100 km west of Paris), the Paper Industry Technical Association (Atip, which brings together French suppliers and paper manufacturers) chose the theme of the environment in the context of the necessary reduction of the environmental footprint and the ecological transition. This event brought together some sixty participants. The following paper mills were present: Corex, CGW, Lacaux, Papeteries de Mandeure, Norske Skog Golbey, RDM, Rossmann (Sical and Papeterie de Sainte-Croix-aux-Mines), Saica, Sterimed and Zuber Rieder.

Innovative technological solutions were presented on water use and treatment, waste management and recovery, and atmospheric emissions. Indeed, water stress is a growing concern for paper manufacturers as a result of climate change. Other related topics were also discussed: regulatory developments, white water management, reducing the carbon footprint of wastewater treatment plants, anaerobic digestion, process waste management, monitoring solutions, air pollution control, etc. Presentations were given by ABB, Acoem, Bellmer Kufferath, BWT, the Centre Technique du Papier (CTP), Gaw, Kadant, Paques and Valmet.

The day before, a visit was organised to the DS Smith site, which produces some 300,000 t/year of lightweight corrugated case material. The new biogas unit was described in particular. The report of this event will be published in the April-May edition of the magazine “La Papeterie”. Finally, Atip will be holding its second technical day on the theme of energy on 21 June in Avignon. The day before, a visit to the Fibre Excellence Provence plant will also be organised.
