Lucart, the multinational paper group known for the Tenderly, Lucart Professional, and Grazie EcoNatural brands, presented its 20th Sustainability Report today at the National Museum of Science and Technology “Leonardo da Vinci” in Milan.
This edition’s title, “Our Vision Lights Up the Future”, celebrates two decades of real commitment to environmental, social, and economic issues, outlining the evolution of a journey that began long before sustainability became a global priority.
Moderated by journalist and environmentalist Tessa Gelisio, the event was attended by Francesco Pasquini, Chief Executive Officer of Lucart; Daniela Bernacchi, Executive Director of UN Global Compact Network Italy; Michele Noera, Sustainability and Energy Transition Manager at Lucart; Valentina Polizzi, Regional Program Representative Manager at Save the Children Italy; Ilaria Stellino, Italy Lead For Sustainable Solutions Group at ING Wholesale Banking.
The presentation featured the renowned explorer Alex Bellini as a special guest; he shared with the audience his perspective on travel as a relationship between humans and the environment to reflect together on the health of our planet.
New resources and new governance for a more ambitious future
The year 2024 saw the transition from the second to the third generation of the Pasquini family with the appointment of Francesco Pasquini as Chief Executive Officer of the Group. The governance was then enriched by the entry of the Azzurra Capital fund into the capital of the holding company. The Tuscany-headquartered group closed the year with a turnover of 685 million euro[1] and at the same time consolidated its European leadership in the production of recycled tissue paper and sustainable hygiene products. These outcomes confirm the solidity of the company, as the result of previously set up plant and organizational investments, achieving a significant turnover in line with expectations.
“This twentieth Report – stated Francesco Pasquini, CEO of Lucart – is not just a review of our performance, but a key milestone in a long journey made of courage, consistency, and vision. Over twenty years we have built an innovative and sustainable industrial model that combines quality, competitiveness, and attention to the environment and people. Today, with the entry of Azzurra Capital into the capital of the holding, we have new resources and a renewed governance that allow us to accelerate our international development while remaining faithful to our values. There are challenges, but we are ready to face them with the strength of those who have a clear direction: creating shared value for all our stakeholders.”
Concrete results for the Planet
The results achieved in 2024 align with a trajectory of continuity that for twenty years has guided Lucart in the construction of a development model that combines economic solidity with environmental and social responsibility. A consistent and progressive path that shows how sustainability is an integral part of the company strategy, as well as a lever for solid and lasting growth.
In particular, last year the company has achieved ahead of schedule the target of 90% of waste sent for recovery set for 2030 and has certified 100% of its plants to ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety, one year ahead of the established target.
During 2024, Lucart further improved its impact on the environment by continuing to reduce CO2 emissions, which now stand at 387.53 Kg CO2 per ton of paper produced compared to 401.27 in 2023 (-3.43%).
Water consumption is also decreasing with 9.43 m3/ton of paper produced (-26.8% vs 2013), one step closer to the target of 9.40 set for 2025. Specific energy consumption also continues to decline (-2.2% vs 2023).
With respect to the use of raw materials, the company currently stands at 46% of virgin cellulose fibres and 54% of paper for recycling, progressing towards the target set for 2030 of 40% virgin cellulose and 60% paper for recycling.
Finally, a positive trend for packaging, which has been 100% recyclable or compostable since 2020, where 82% has a recycled content higher than 30%.
International recognitions and commitments
For the third consecutive year, Lucart has earned the Ecovadis Platinum medal, which places the company among the 1% of the most virtuous in the world in terms of corporate social responsibility. The Group has also consolidated its commitment to decarbonization by joining the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) with the aim to develop a strategy to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions based on the most recent scientific evidence, validated by a third-party body. By joining the program, Lucart undertakes to present by the end of 2025 specific reduction targets for directly controlled emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions linked to the production of electricity, steam or heat purchased from the grid (Scope 2) and indirect emissions from its value chain (Scope 3).
An ongoing journey
In an uncertain geopolitical context with growing pressure placed on the ecological transition, Lucart reaffirms its resolve to pursue a circular and future-oriented business model. Its 20th Sustainability Report represents a fundamental step along a journey that is set to continue with even greater strength, thanks to the enthusiasm of the Group’s people and the new energies brought by change.
