Mondi collaborates with Fixit Gruppe to supply a standardized paper bag portfolio that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 135 tonnes per year

Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has collaborated with Fixit Gruppe to create a unified paper bag portfolio for over 100 building material products across Europe. The project marks a new step in the long-standing collaboration between both companies, supporting a more harmonized packaging approach in Europe while maintaining consistent packaging quality and reliable performance across a wide range of products. The optimized portfolio enables a more efficient use of materials, improves design to support recycling, and aligns with Fixit Gruppe’s sustainability strategy by contributing to a reduction of 135 tonnes of CO2 emissions compared to the previous financial year.

Fixit Gruppe is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of building material systems, supplying a wide range of products to DIY stores throughout the region. Previously, its products were packaged in paper bags of varying basis weights and formats depending on different product needs, weather conditions, and packaging regulations. Following a specialized audit at Mondi’s Bag Application Centre in Frantschach, Austria, Mondi specialists analyzed Fixit Gruppe’s existing packaging and developed an optimized, standardized solution. The project demonstrates how packaging optimization can create value across the entire supply chain, supporting operational consistency, product performance, and sustainability goals across multiple markets.

By focusing on material usage, paper basis weight, the required barrier protection, and the thickness of the inner plastic layer, Mondi developed standardized paper bag formats that meet the needs of different building materials and markets. As a backward-integrated producer, Mondi manufactures its own kraft paper for these bags, bringing deep papermaking expertise and an integrated end-to-end value chain from a single source. The new valve paper bags provide the necessary moisture protection for products such as cement and other powdered materials, while ensuring an efficient and reliable filling process on Fixit Gruppe’s machinery.

Davide Battiston, International Key Account Manager, Mondi Paper Bags Italy, comments: “This project demonstrates how we help customers solve complex packaging challenges while reducing environmental impact. By analyzing Fixit Gruppe’s entire product range and applying our expertise in papermaking and converting, we developed a standardized solution without compromising performance. It is also a great example of how close collaboration with customers can generate long-term value across their packaging portfolio.”

Bernhard Zott, Director of Research & Development at Fixit Gruppe, says: “We needed packaging that protected a wide range of building materials, was practical on construction sites, and supported our climate strategy. Mondi evaluated everything thoroughly and worked closely with our teams to enhance functionality, sustainability, and quality requirements.”
