Kadant Johnson Europe Propels Its Leadership Position in Paper Drying by Introducing New PT2X™ Steam Joint

Kadant Johnson Europe, a subsidiary of Kadant Inc., launched the new PT2X rotary steam joint for paper drying applications.

European paper machine builders, also known as Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), recognized the advantage of steel dryers which give especially containerboard packaging producers the possibility to operate, part or their whole drying section at higher pressures and temperatures.

Hence, Kadant Johnson Europe, who is always in close cooperation with customers, was challenged to develop an innovated new design to adapt to this requirement.

“The patent-pending PT2X rotary steam joint is designed for high-pressure drying applications using up to 14 barg steam to maximize drying capacity in combination with extended seal life, enhanced safety and maintenance features.” said Frank van Riet, Kadant Johnson Europe BV, general manager.

The new product allows dryers to run with increased temperatures, offers quick replacement of wear components, and provides a uniform and efficient heat transfer to dry paper.

PT2X Rotary Steam Joint patent-pending design is capable of 25% higher operating pressure than traditional paper dryer steam joints and a new cartridge design includes a high-visibility wear indicator and a protective shroud. This enables paper mills to increase operating pressures, plan maintenance and improve uptime.

Isaac Romero, lead PT2X rotary joint design engineer at Kadant Johnson LLC, added, “When we developed this product, we understood extended time between planned maintenance and serviceability make plants more profitable. By designing a high-visibility wear indicator, plant personnel can assess the wear of the seal ring immediately with no measuring tools needed. When service is needed, the seal cartridge design makes it easy to swap out a worn seal cartridge.”

The PT2X rotary joint is part of a system that includes Kadant Johnson Europe stationary syphons and Turbulator® Tube™ bars. Together, they allow paper dryers to operate their steam and condensate system over a wide range of conditions, with flexibility, reliability, and energy efficiency while offering extended secondary seal life. In this way, Kadant Johnson Europe continues its commitment to support customers achieving their sustainability goals.
