At this year’s Interpack trade fair, Sappi is turning sustainable packaging into a tangible experience by serving ice cream to visitors in its barrier paper solutions. But this is more than just a treat for visitors. Each ice cream cone comes wrapped in Sappi’s innovative Guard Duo barrier paper, turning a simple moment into a real-life demonstration of sustainable packaging in action.
A Sweet Way to Tackle Serious Topics
With increasing regulatory pressure such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), companies across the value chain are under growing pressure to find practical, scalable solutions. Sappi uses this engaging concept at Interpack to demonstrate how innovation can already meet these requirements, without compromising performance.
Guard Duo: High Performance Meets Sustainability
Guard Duo is part of Sappi’s portfolio as a leading provider of barrier papers. The two-side coated paper combines strong product protection with recyclability, supporting brands in meeting sustainability goals.
Unlike many conventional multi-layer packaging materials that are difficult, or even impossible, to recycle, Guard Duo is designed as a mono-material solution. This means it can be recycled within existing paper waste streams, helping brands transition to compliant, future-ready packaging.
Versatility Across Applications
Guard Duo is available in a range of grammages to suit various applications. The 105 gsm version is ideal for the packaging of ice cream cones, while the 115 gsm version is particularly well-suited for block bottom bag applications, especially in the confectionery sector. This flexibility enables brands to switch to more sustainable materials without compromising functionality or protection.
“Future Proof Packaging Papers”
The European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation applies from August 2026 with various phased obligations. Under the theme “Future Proof Packaging Papers,” Sappi will showcase its flexible packaging solutions at Interpack (hall 8A, stand B35), including Guard Duo, high-barrier papers Guard Pro OHS and Guard Pro OMH, and Guard Twist, designed to meet packaging needs across food, tea and confectionery applications.
