Sofidel: 60 years of history projected into the future

Sofidel, one of the world’s leading groups in the production of paper for hygienic and domestic use, known in particular in Italy and Europe for the Regina brand, celebrates its first 60 years since its foundation in 2026 .

It will do so with a program of internal and external initiatives that will unfold throughout the year. The goal is to reaffirm the core values that have fueled the Group’s journey, which today, as always, is projected toward the future, according to a vision oriented toward responsible growth and founded on the value of “Clean Living,” a positive force that promotes a cleaner, healthier, and more harmonious life for all.

Founded in 1966 from the entrepreneurial intuition of Emi Stefani and Giuseppe Lazzareschi , the Sofidel Group – still entirely owned by the founding families – is in a phase of significant expansion, particularly in the United States , a market where it has invested over 1.7 billion dollars in the last 3 years, becoming the fourth largest company in terms of production capacity in that market, as well as the second largest player on the European market .

The celebrations will look first and foremost at the more than 9,500 people who are part of Sofidel in 13 countries in Europe and the USA .

Two Anniversary Days are planned , which will be held in June at the Group’s historic headquarters in Porcari (Lucca), and in Horsham, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Sofidel has its North American Corporate Office. These two events will be preceded and followed by 26 “Family Days” involving the Group’s plants . This calendar of events is intended to be a symbolic embrace of the entire Sofidel community: all those who, every day, with their work and commitment, contribute to making the Group better, in Italy, Europe, and the United States.

On the external front, among the main public initiatives, the continuation of the partnership with the Giro d’Italia stands out , which – in addition to Regina’s sponsorship with brand visibility throughout the entire cycling race – sees the start of a stage, the eleventh, scheduled for May 20th, from Porcari itself, for the Porcari-Chiavari district, called “Paper District”: a tribute to the paper district where the Group was born and grew, and where its operational heart still remains.

In this special year, there are other new features for the Giro d’Italia. Along the route of each stage, Sofidel will have an arch located 60 kilometers from the finish, to celebrate its anniversary . And Regina will sponsor the “Gran Premio della Fuga ,” which goes to the rider who covers the most kilometers in attack during the entire race. Not only that. Sofidel will also have its own “Regina” team competing in the Giro-E , the competition held parallel to the Giro d’Italia over shorter stages using pedal-assisted e-bikes. The team is captained by Claudio Chiappucci , “El Diablo,” a cycling star of the 1990s, and is made up of Group employees and stakeholders .

Also noteworthy in Italy is the involvement of Sofidel employees in several local corporate volunteer initiatives—both environmental and social— conducted with associations such as Plastic Free and Galaxy Baskin in Porcari.

“We are preparing to celebrate this anniversary, looking forward as always,” said Luigi Lazzareschi, CEO of the Sofidel Group . “Over these 60 years, we have never stopped working responsibly according to an industrial logic, committed to creating shared value for our people and society, and to limiting our impact on natural capital. At a time when companies are engaged in the challenging journey of the dual transition, ecological and digital, we continue to move forward with conviction in the same direction.”

“Sofidel celebrates its 60th anniversary by thanking all its employees who have contributed to writing a history of growth and development. And it is grateful to its customers and consumers for the trust they have shown over all these years. With these sentiments in our hearts, and strengthened by our values, today more than ever we work to continue fueling the dreams of those who founded this Group,” added Paola Stefani, President of Sofidel .

Sofidel’s history is that of a family business, deeply rooted in the Lucca area. A journey that began in the Lucca Plain, an area where paper production is a cultural tradition, and continued with decisive milestones such as the creation of the iconic Regina brand and the invention of Rotoloni —which represented a major market innovation and made Italian advertising history thanks to the catchphrase “Rotoloni Regina never end” —and expansion into international markets , first in Europe and then in the United States. A journey along which sustainability has established itself as a strategic lever for development, essential for innovation and creating shared value over the long term .
