Sofidel France inaugurated the second biomass boiler at its Frouard site, near Nancy

On March 3, Sofidel France inaugurated its second biomass boiler at its Frouard site, near Nancy, in eastern France. This strategic investment is central to the group’s energy transition. This large-scale project, supported by Ademe (the French Agency for Ecological Transition) as part of the BCIAT 2022 program (Biomass Heat for Industry, Agriculture, and the Service Sector), marks a turning point for the site’s energy independence.

This new equipment will allow Sofidel to:

  • Reduce its annual natural gas consumption by 44,000 MW,
  • Decrease its CO₂ emissions by 9,100 tons per year,
  • Significantly increase the share of renewable energy in its industrial processes.

Construction began in the fall of 2024: the civil engineering work was entrusted to Eiffage, while the technical installation was carried out by Bono.
In parallel, Sofidel is continuing its investments in France. At the Roanne site, the modernization of the paper machine is also contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions. A BCIAT application has been submitted for the construction of a biomass boiler to further enhance the site’s carbon performance.

Sofidel has also been selected by Ademe as part of the “Decarb Ind” program for the installation of a new press on the second paper machine, an investment also planned for the first machine.

These projects are part of the group’s overall strategy to reduce its carbon footprint, in line with the objectives set by the Paris Agreement (COP21) and the group’s slogan: “Clean Living.” For several years, Sofidel has set ambitious goals: reducing the use of virgin plastic, decreasing water consumption, and managing resources responsibly and sustainably.
