Metsä Board, a leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards, will participate at The Pharma Sustainability Days 2025. The company will showcase its cutting-edge packaging solutions at its stand and host a workshop focusing on the potential to reduce the climate impact of pharmaceutical packaging through fact-based carbon footprint calculations.
The event brings together key stakeholders from across the pharmaceutical industry to discuss strategies for creating more sustainable, efficient, and circular value chains. Packaging is increasingly recognised as a crucial lever for change, with pharmaceutical companies under growing pressure to reduce their Scope 3 emissions.
Workshop: “Recyclable Pharma Packaging with reduced CO₂ emissions”
Presented by Anne Uusitalo, Product Safety and Sustainability Director, and Christophe Baudry, Sales Director Brand Owners EMEA at Metsä Board, the workshop will highlight the role of lightweight, fresh fibre paperboards in offering a potential to cutpackaging-related emissions. Via an online connection, participants will also gain an insight into the Excellence Centre in Finland, where Iiro Numminen, Structural Packaging Designer, will provide insights into the challenges of packaging design for pharmaceutical products.
“Pharmaceutical packaging must meet strict functional and regulatory standards, but it can also be designed with sustainability in mind,” says Anne Uusitalo. “We are seeing growing demand for packaging materials that are safe and effective, but also recyclable and low in carbon impact.”
Supporting a Circular Future for Pharma
Metsä Board’s paperboards are made from renewable Northern European wood fibres and are recyclable within standard paper recycling systems.
Metsä Board will showcase its lightweight paperboards designed to require less raw material without compromising strength. Using fresh wood fibre from Northern European forests also ensures the high quality of Metsä Board’s paperboards, making them ideal for quality printing, conversion and finishes such as embossing. They are suitable for sensitive packaging – critical in pharmaceutical applications.
Metsä Board’s target is fossil-free production by 2030. Fossil-free energy accounts already for 89% of the company’s total energy consumption.
