Sappi Europe Boosts Magno Web Paper Production Sustainability at Kirkniemi Mill

Sappi Europe has placed its Magno Web paper range at the heart of its sustainability progress, with production now fully located at the Kirkniemi Mill in Lohja, Finland. Thanks to significant investments in renewable energy and clean electricity, Magno Web benefits from Kirkniemi’s decarbonised operations without compromising quality or performance, and represents a 58% reduction in its carbon footprint compared to its previous production site.

Magno Web is a range of high-quality, wood-free coated papers that has earned the trust of sectors such as publishing, advertising, and high-end printing applications. It is valued for its consistent image reproduction, balanced whiteness and opacity, and its choice of gloss or satin finishes, meeting customer demands for performance and flexibility.

In 2023, the Kirkniemi mill successfully transitioned to renewable energy derived from biomass, thereby reducing scope 1 (direct) emissions related to its operations by 90%. By powering the site with clean electricity, scope 2 (indirect) emissions have also been eliminated, making Kirkniemi a benchmark for sustainable paper production.

These investments also support customers’ efforts to reduce their own carbon footprint, having a direct impact on the reduction of their scope 3 emissions, which are indirect emissions related to the purchase of goods and services.

The transformation of the Kirkniemi mill is part of the nearly 80 projects presented in Sappi Europe’s 2020-2025 Decarbonisation Roadmap, which contribute significantly to Sappi’s science-based targets for 2030.

“Sappi Europe’s decarbonisation journey has accelerated considerably since 2020. We are proud to have largely exceeded our CO2 emissions reduction targets for 2025, despite a challenging economic environment,” said Sarah Price, Sustainability Director at Sappi Europe. “For us, this goes well beyond emissions; it’s about investing now for positive, long-term change and enabling our customers to do the same.”

While the Galerie paper range was the first to demonstrate the impact of Sappi’s decarbonisation efforts, with a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions by the end of 2024, the extension of these benefits to Magno Web underscores Kirkniemi’s role as a sustainable and ultramodern platform for the production of coated and uncoated papers. Furthermore, both the Magno Web and Galerie paper ranges are available upon request with PEFC (PEFC/07-32-76) or FSC (FSC-C015022™) certification.

These remarkable achievements align with global climate goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 on Climate Action, contributing to Sappi’s commitment to reduce combined scope 1 and 2 emissions by 41.5% by 2030 (starting from 2019).
