Munksjö site in Rottersac, France, receives ISO 22000 Food Safety certification

Munksjö, a world-leading manufacturer of advanced specialty papers announces that its Rottersac production site in France has been awarded ISO 22000:2005 certification by SGS for its Food Safety Management System.

A large proportion of the technical papers manufactured at the Rottersac mill include products for the food packaging industry. These packaging papers serve various end-use applications in the bakery, confectionery, fresh produce and dairy markets. Exemples include baking papers and flexible packaging papers for take-away food, sweets, cheese and butter, to name a few.

Papyrus to invest in a European paper specialties hub in Cologne, Germany

Papyrus announces the plan to invest in a new logistical hub in Cologne, Germany to optimise its logistical infrastructure and improve the service offering of paper specialties to its customers across Europe. The new 22,000 m2 state-of-the-art warehouse will be accompanied with a paper competence center for service development, training and customer seminars. It is expected to open in early 2018.

This further investment in Papyrus is inline with the strategy to build the strongest platform for our Printing & Creative Solutions business segment in Europe. It follows the earlier investment in Switzerland through the acquisition of Inapa Switzerland in December 2016 and the acquisition of the Swedish Viscom company Olsonic.

Valmet to supply a winder for Shandong Chenming Paper in China

Valmet will supply a new winder for Shandong Chenming Paper Ltd. at its Zhanjiang site in Guangdong province, China. The board machine BM 4 producing folding box board (FBB) will be equipped with a new winder to increase winding capacity. The new winder will be started-up in 2018.

The order is included in Valmet’s first quarter of 2017 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The value of orders of this type and scope is typically around EUR 5-10 million.

Brussels Employee-led Tree Planting Initiative enters its 7th year

Dressed in wellington boots and rain jackets, the dedicated Tree Planting Team from Sappi Europe, including Berry Wiersum CEO, once again braved the Brussels weather to plant a further 1,250 saplings in the Forêt des Soignes. UPM to sell its hydro power facilities in Schongau and Ettringen to erdgas schwaben

UPM has signed an agreement on the sale of its hydro power facilities in Schongau and Ettringen, Germany to erdgas schwaben gmbh, a regional energy company, located in Augsburg.

The sale and purchase agreement is still subject to third party approvals. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The transaction does not have an effect on the employees working at UPM Schongau and UPM Ettringen mills.

"erdgas schwaben is a deep-rooted energy company in Bavarian Swabia as well as a pioneer in power generation from renewable energy sources. As an integral part of an energy company the hydro power facilities could be better developed and optimized," says Rainer Häring, Director Energy, Western Europe, UPM Paper ENA.

Pöyry awarded detailed design assignment for major rebuild of a paper machine for Sappi North America

Sappi has awarded Pöyry the detailed design for the rebuild of its No. 1 Paper Machine at its Somerset paper manufacturing facility in Skowhegan, Maine, USA. The rebuild will impact nearly every component of the machine from pulp makedown to finishing and shipping.

The $165MM USD capital project will expand Sappi North America’s manufacturing capabilities and flexibility to include a variety of consumer packaging grades. The investment of its No. 1 paper machine will maintain Sappi’s leadership position in the graphic paper market, increasing annual production capacity at this mill to nearly one million tons per year.

Sonoco Implementing Price Increases for All Rigid Paperboard Containers in North America

Sonoco today announced it is implementing price increases for all round composite cans and shaped rigid paperboard containers in North America by a minimum of 5 percent. The increase is effective with shipments beginning April 15, 2017.

“This price adjustment is necessary to recover continuing cost inflation, particularly in uncoated recycled paperboard, a primary raw material,” said Jeff Tomaszewski, vice president and general manager for Sonoco’s Rigid Paper and Closures North America Division.

Sonoco-Alcore to Increase Prices for Tubes & Cores in Europe

 Sonoco-Alcore today announced it will raise prices for paper-based tubes and cores by up to 8.5 percent, depending on product category, effective from shipments beginning on 15th April 2017.

"The increase follows a continuous rise over the past six months in coreboard prices across Europe driven predominantly by higher OCC costs peaking now in a 60 Euro per ton or a 15 percent increase in coreboard," said Karsten Kemmerling, Director of Sales and Marketing - Tubes and Cores, Europe. "We are doing all we can to maintain tight cost control, but with coreboard a dominant part of our cost, we are unable to offset such movement."

Three days of busy networking comes to successful close at PaperWorld Middle East 2017

Three days of busy networking and inspirational ideas has come to a successful close at PaperWorld Middle East 2017, as the magical world of school and office supplies, arts and crafts, gift articles, along with children’s games and toys came to the fore.

The region’s premier trade fair for paper, stationery, and office supplies saw a strong turnout in 2017, with 5,985 trade buyers from 93 countries stopping by the stands of 313 exhibitors from 42 countries.

The positive industry response underlines Paperworld Middle East’s importance as a key gateway to a regional market that’s home to more than 200 million people, as the halls buzzed right up to closing on 16th March at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

What would you highlight in terms of sustainability in the past year ?

A recognition of all the hard work we have put into sustainability was Holmen being ranked 21st on the Global 100 list of the world’s most sustainable companies. Holmen was also ranked highly for its climate work in the annual survey carried out by CDP. But most of all I would like to highlight the way that Holmen’s operations bring major climate benefits by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by over two million tonnes per year. This can be seen as one step on the way towards meeting the commitments made in the global climate agreement.

Ilim Group identifies 5 priority regions in the Chinese market

Ilim Group held an off-site business conference on future operations in the Chinese market in Xiamen. Over 370 delegates from partner companies took part in the event. The key topics discussed included priority regions for sales development and projected product sales volumes.
